AN AGE OLD CRAFT FOR MODERN TIMES

The leaves of the Ilala Palm are used in the manufacture of these lampshades. It grows abundantly on the grassy sand flats of Maputaland, and being pliable and strong, is used extensively in basket weaving. The "Lampshade Project" was originally conceived as a means of re-directing and uplifting the talents of a group of rural women living in a remote corner of Maputaland, who were reliant on the sale of shopping bags as their sole source of income.

Today, from small beginnings, the salvation group is producing items sought-after by Interior Decorators, Lodges and Galleries, both locally and abroad, and as a result, their quality of life has escalated beyond their wildest dreams. Other products in the range are woven Lampbases, Umbrella Stands, Fruit Bowls, and woven Basket Drawers; the latter can be made to order in various sizes.
